Come and Meet Some Very Special People

We are delighted to welcome some very special visitors joining our exciting 30th Anniversary event.

Percy Simmonds at Mobility RoadshowWelcoming visitors to the show will be Telford’s longest-serving town crier. At 90 years, Percy Simmonds is the UK’s oldest known town crier and a classic ‘act’. Only last year he swapped his motorbike for a mobility scooter, but continues to drive. Percy’s advice to everyone contemplating how to remain active in advanced years is: ”If there are mobility aids available, use them”!

Falkland’s war veteran, Simon Weston, a good friend of the Roadshow over the years, joins us on the afternoon of Monday 27th.

 

Visiting on Friday 28th is sitting volleyball player Martine Wright, winner of the BBC Helen Rollason Award seven years after surviving the 7/7 bombings.

 

Also on Friday 28th visitors will have the opportunity to gain photographic tips from Giles Duley, the award-winning humanitarian photographer. In 2011 whilst on patrol with the US Army in Afghanistan Giles stepped on an improvised explosive device and was severely injured losing both legs and an arm. Giles has continued to win awards following his rehabilitation.

 

 

On Saturday 29th we welcome two Paralympians. Cyclist Rik Waddon who has gained a long list of awards over the years including London 2012 Paralympic Games Team Sprint Silver Medallist.

Local Telford girl, Deborah Brennan Johnson won silver and gold in World Championships, gold (a world record) and bronze at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 and silver and bronze at Athens Paralympics in 2004. Now retired from her racing career she is dedicated to passing on her knowledge and training others.

 

 

 

Michael McGrath at Mobility Roadshow

Michael McGrath, the first and only disabled person to lead expeditions to both North and South Poles and co-founder of The Muscle Help Foundation – Olympic flame carrier and a Mobility Roadshow Ambassador – will be on the Etac stand.

Another Mobility Roadshow Ambassador, Steve Tarrant the racing marshal who miraculously survived a horrific accident at the 2000 Festival of Speed will be with TGA to announce his new ‘JoGLE’ mobility scooter Guinness World Record attempt for 2014.

Dave Sykes, award-winning paraplegic microlight pilot and adventurer will be with the charity Aerobility talking about his record breaking solo flight from England to Australia and his subsequent book.

The Red Wheelies scooter formation display team, which holds the Guinness World Record for ‘the greatest distance covered in 24hrs by motorised wheelchair or mobility scooter’ will be performing each day.

And of course a very special welcome to all our visitors.
