Driving mobility forward .....

Established in February 1998, registered charity Mobility Choice is responsible for organising the annual Mobility Roadshow.  The Memorandum and Articles of Association of Mobility Choice sets out the following objectives of the charity:

The objectives for which the charity is established are to advance the independent mobility of disabled and older people for their relief and assistance, and in particular but not exclusively by :-

a) organising and running the Mobility Roadshow and such similar events as are deemed by the charity to be necessary;
b) facilitating the establishment of centres where advice and guidance can be given;
c) facilitating the acquisition of equipment and resources for such centres and for existing assessment centres as necessary;
d) facilitating the setting up and running of driving programmes to provide intensive advice and tuition to disabled and older people on safe driving.

A Board of Trustees, chaired by Ann Frye OBE, former Head of the Department of Transport’s Mobility & Inclusion Unit, oversees the Charity’s work.  Trustees of the Charity include Sir Bert Massie, former Chair of the Disability Rights Commission, Andrew Braddock, former head of Transport for London’s Disabled Passengers Unit, and Ed Passant, Chief Executive of The Forum of Mobility Centres.

The Charity’s primary function is to organise the Mobility Roadshow on an annual basis.  The event was originally set up by the Department for Transport in 1983, and was run biennially until the charity assumed responsibility for the show in 1998.  The show moved to an annual event in 1999, with a second show every other year since 2004 at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh.

The aim of the Mobility Roadshow is to give anyone with a mobility problem - drivers, passengers, adults or children - the chance to see what is available to help solve that problem and most importantly to try out and evaluate the options.  Exhibitors include many of the major motor manufacturers, plus vehicle adaptation and conversion specialists, mobility aids manufacturers, information and advice services, charities, mobility insurance specialists, clothing companies, plus sports, travel and leisure options.

The Roadshow is a ‘hands-on’ event, with opportunities to test drive adapted and converted vehicles, either as a driver or passenger.  Motor manufacturers provide a range of vehicles fitted with a variety of adaptations eg hand controls, wheelchair hoist, swivel seat.  The vehicles are fitted with dual controls for safety, and a qualified professional driver accompanies visitors on test drives, which take place on a private circuit or road system, not on the public highway.  Visitors are able to try out scooters and wheelchairs on an indoor mobility test track, or an outdoor cycle and scooter test area.  As well as test driving, other driving experiences are available (depending on venue), such as 4 x 4, skid car, go-karts and all-terrain vehicles, plus an interactive Sports Arena, an accessible climbing wall and all-ability cycling options.

In 2005, Mobility Choice  launched the Ready Willing & Mobile design competition for schoolchildren across the UK, encouraging them to think about disability, accessibility and inclusivity. The competition was a huge success and is now an annual event, culminating in a prize giving at the show.
