Ready Willing & Mobile Competition 2010
In celebration of National Young Disabled Person’s Day on Saturday 3rd July 2010, The Mobility Roadshow - the UK’s largest mobility and lifestyle event - is offering young people an exciting opportunity to win fantastic prizes for themselves and their school or club.
Since 2005, the annual Ready, Willing and Mobile competition has encouraged children to think about disability, accessibility and inclusivity from a young age. It offers an ideal project for team building or classroom discussion, highlighting issues such as social integration, disability awareness and inclusive communities.
The competition seeks bright ideas from all young people aged 7 to 16 years, both disabled and non-disabled: ideas to help children with disabilities on the move - at home, at school, at play. Mobility is not an issue exclusive to wheelchairs users … sensory, learning or memory impairments can also affect a young person’s mobility in different and challenging ways.
Fantastic prizes to be won!
The competition is divided into two age categories – 7-11 and 12-16 – with a winner and runner-up in each age group. An outright winner is then chosen from the two age group winners.
The outright winner will receive for their school or club:
• £1,000 cash towards equipment or projects
• £250-worth of STAEDTLER art and crafts materials
• £100-worth of Penguin Books
And for themselves:
• An overnight stay for four at a Holiday Inn in London with a trip on the London Eye
Each of the two age category winners receives:
• a digital camera
• £50-worth of Penguin Books
• VIP visit to the Mobility Roadshow 2010 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough
Plus there are two runner-up prizes of Penguin Books
The 2009 outright winning entry came from 11-year-old twins Olivia and Caitlin Brough from Marden Bridge Middle School, Whitley Bay. “We encourage our pupils to think of others and welcomed the opportunity for them to consider inclusivity,” commented Paul Charlton, Head of Design Technology at the school. “For the second year running we introduced the competition brief as a project and I was thrilled that the girls’ entry was the overall winner.”
Entries can be from individuals or pairs. The outright winner’s school or club (e.g. Youth Club, Brownies, Scouts, sports club, etc) wins the cash prize, STAEDTLER art materials and £100-worth of Penguin Books of choice. Previous entries have included a great variety of accessible sports and play equipment, accessories and tools, communication and shopping aids and funky lifestyle wheelchairs. It could be a concept for a brand-new product or service that everyone can use, but especially good for young disabled people, or an idea for developing an existing item or facility – there are endless possibilities!
Entries should be in the form of a drawing, painting or diagram (max A3 size) accompanied by descriptive text.
