NEWS RELEASE
Focus on Fitness to Aid Mobility
22 February 2012 - The organisers of the annual Mobility Roadshow are promoting ‘fitness for mobility’, an exciting new feature at this year’s event that takes place at the East of England Showground, Peterborough on 21st, 22nd and 23rd June.
If you are disabled keeping fit can be even more important than for a non-disabled person but everyday exercise such as walking, jogging and running can be out of reach. Exercise is important to help prevent obesity and cardiovascular disease and a good fitness level can also mean greatly enhanced mobility.
In the Cyclone Technologies Focus on Fitness zone (Stand D7) visitors will be able to try a wide range of equipment to meet every day needs - from gentle activity to full cardiovascular workouts. Included will be new developments in functional electrical stimulation (FES) therapy equipment that can be used at home to benefit rehabilitation of some stroke and MS patients as well as spinal injury.
"Increasing the focus on fitness at the Mobility Roadshow is an excellent initiative, which we are pleased to support,” said Dave Hawkins, Managing Director, Cyclone Technologies. “It is proven that an optimum level of fitness is vital to the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities, especially to the rehabilitation of those newly disabled. The timing is perfect, as the rapid advancement of new technology is enabling everyday fitness to be more accessible and we shall have an exciting range of products for visitors to try out."
Milton
Keynes-based company Medicotech will have on their stand (C13) a wide range of
active/passive bikes, which can be used either at home or in a rehab setting. “As a wheelchair user I know how important it is to get the best possible advice and range of products to view under the one roof - that is why it is great to be at the Mobility Roadshow again,” said Shukri Mansour, Managing Director, Medicotech Ltd. “Medical studies have proved that whether you are cycling passively or actively with our bikes you can maintain and regain muscle strength and vastly improve your level of fitness and well-being. The Olympic year is well chosen to put the spotlight on fitness.”
Visitors will also be able to gauge their fitness in this year’s expanded Sports Arena/Activity Zone hosted by RGK Wheelchairs. Celebrating the London 2012 Paralympic Games visitors can participate in mini tournaments and events, plus the ever popular accessible climbing wall.
RGK Sports Arena 2012
Once again the Sports Arena at the Mobility Roadshow 2012 is being run by RGK Wheelchairs with exciting opportunities for members of the public to get involved in various sporting activities and meet some top athletes each day.
Five times Paralympian Colin Price (pictured below) will be hosting a variety of sports and competitions each day at the arena. Everybody is encouraged to participate in the games and competitions with a variety of top prizes available each day including signed basketballs from the entire Great British Men’s and Women’s teams. Colin will be accompanied by players from the Great Britain wheelchair basketball team over the three days in the sports arena which will provide the unique opportunity for people visiting the exhibition to have a go at shooting some hoops against them and picking up some helpful tips in the process. ![]()
RGK are also sponsors to the men’s, women’s and junior Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball team with the RGK’s Interceptor Wheelchair being their wheelchair of choice.
Members of the Great Britain wheelchair basketball team will also be on the RGK exhibition stand throughout the three days. Members of the public w
ill be able to ask questions and get fitted for a complete custom fit wheelchair to match your measurements, colour and style just like the Great Britain wheelchair basketball teams.
All sessions in the Sports Arena are intended for public participation regardless of whether people are disabled or able-bodied. RGK will be supplying a number of wheelchairs for people to use in the sessions.
Jacqui Jones, Executive Director of Mobility Choice, the Roadshow organisers, commented: "The interactive Sports Arena has become an
integral feature of the Roadshow in recent years, and with London 2012 now imminent, it is an ideal time for people with a variety of disabilities to be able to get involved. We're delighted to be working again with RGK Wheelchairs, long-term supporters of the event, to deliver this opportunity to visitors from all over the country."
As well as the Sports Arena, there will be Cyclefest featuring the best in all-ability cycling, the Climbing Wall, Archery, Laser Clays and other sports and activities TBC.
Full details of activities, VIP visitors and timetable will be published on the website nearer the time.
