Ana Simmonds (31) from Whitstable, wife of Mobility Choice trustee Mike Simmonds, is competing in the 2017 Race to the Stones for the first time and raising vital funds for the charity in the process.
UK charity Mobility Choice was established in 1998 and focuses on advancing independent mobility for people with disabilities and older people. It is responsible for organising the annual Mobility Roadshow and Get Going Live! events which focus on maintaining independent mobility, whatever your age or ability.
Ana participated in her first race three years ago, on the spur of the moment, to fundraise for children with autism, and has since competed in numerous events including the 2016 London Marathon. Disappointed by being unable to secure a place in the marathon this year, Ana has decided to challenge herself with the 100k Race to the Stones taking place in July.
Ana comments, “Not getting into the 2017 London Marathon has pushed me over the edge! Race to the Stones is roughly two and a half marathons, all in one go. It’s very different to my first race which, at just five miles, was a long way for me at the time. I’m hoping the stunning landscape along the Ridgeway, through the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs, will spur me on! ”.
Racing competitively, and the training involved, has not always been easy for Ana as she has arthritis, asthma and hypermobility which has meant she frequently suffers with injury. Training for last year’s marathon resulted in hip pain and tendonitis as well as an injury to her foot. Despite this, Ana is focussed on her main goal of raising funds for Mobility Choice, a charity she feel passionately about.
Ana explains, “Mobility Choice’s primary function is to organise the popular annual Mobility Roadshow. This free to enter event provides accessible driving solutions, unique test drives and hands on mobility options. Any funds I can raise for Mobility Choice will help this amazing event to continue to provide people with mobility options for enhanced independence”.
