Shaan Patel aged 10 from Peterborough was announced winner of the national Ready Willing & Mobile competition on Thursday 19th July 2007. Shaan had already been declared winner of the 7-11 age category.
TV motoring celebrity, Vicki Butler-Henderson, announced the winners and presented prizes. A team of four girls from The Cheltenham Ladies` College was the runner-up, having won the 12-16 age category.
Shaan`s winning idea is called Super Whizz Blind Stick with a range of helpful features for visually impaired people, including voice-activated communication, weather barometer, satellite navigation, CD player, drinks holder, panic button, light and umbrella.
Caring Shaan`s inspiration came when watching a programme about disability. I felt amazed when I heard that I had won my category. I couldn`t believe I won the whole competition and was thrilled to be at the Roadshow to see all the gadgets available for disabled people. I think it is important that we always try to help other children so they can do the things we do. The Cheltenam girls, Louise Cowan (12), Jessica Darke (12), Molly Fleming (13) and Melissa Sirandula (11) had created Fantasy Dome, a sparkle dome` environment designed to give children with a variety of disabilities a wide range of different sensory experiences. The judges had been very impressed with the amount of research behind their ideas.
Presenting the awards, Vicki Butler-Henderson said: I am inspired to see so many young minds thinking of such a variety of fantastic ideas. It is encouraging that so many children are caring and thoughtful. I am proud to have the opportunity to meet the final winners today and to share their success.
